The White House continues to make improvements
and streamline this whole process...so keep checking back,
either here or directly on their website, for the latest-and-greatest tips
on getting what promises to be a treasured gift for that special person in
your life.
You can now fax your requests:
You've still gotta follow the guidelines I've laid out for you below, but
now you can use that dusty box sitting near the telephone (it's called a fax
machine) to fire off your request to Washington.
Their fax number is:
(202) 395-1232
Or you can try your luck and e-mail your
request in: I would not
advise this...since e-mail is still a very inexact science, and stuff does
fall through the cyber-cracks. Faxing and mailing are your best bets, but
if you're hell-bent on e-mailing your request,
click here. (And don't come whinin' to me when you don't get a
reply...I warned you!)
Alrighty then, here are the official White
House "do you qualify for a letter from the Prez'" guidelines:
- U.S. Citizens Only. The White House will send greetings to United States citizens only, for special occasions as outlined below.
- Advance Notice Required. Your request must be received four weeks in advance of the event date. We make every effort to honor every request, but we cannot guarantee a greeting if this guideline is not met. (Greetings are generally not sent after the event date, except for wedding congratulations and newborn acknowledgments.)
- Anniversary Greetings. Are extended only to those couples who are celebrating their 50th (and subsequent) wedding anniversary.
- Birthday Greetings. Cards will be sent only to individuals 80 years of age and above. A special card is sent for those who reach 100 years of age.
- Other Greetings. A limited number of special occasions other than birthdays and anniversaries exist for the which the Greetings Office will send appropriate recognition to U.S. citizens. These include:
- Wedding (send your request after the event; include couple's married names)
- Baby's Birth: (must be born during the Bush Administration; send request only after baby's birth, include baby's date of birth and full names and address of baby and parents)
- Eagle Scout Award
- Girl Scout Gold Award
- Bar/Bat Mitzvah or equivalent occasion
- Required Information. Please include the following in your request:
- Name and home address of honoree(s)
- Form of address (Mr.. Ms., Mrs., Dr., etc.)
- Exact date of occasion (month/day/year)
- Age (birthdays) or number of years of marriage
- Your (requestor's) name and daytime phone number
- Any specific mailing instructions if other than to honoree's address
- Wedding (send your request after the event; include couple's married names)
- Baby's Birth (must be born during the tenure of the current Bush Administration; send request only after baby's birth; include baby's date of birth and full names and address of baby and parents)
- Where to Send Your Request. The White House Greetings Office, Room 39, Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Washington, DC, 20502.
- When To Expect Your Greeting. In most cases, greetings will be mailed from the White House approximately ten days prior to the event. If you have made a special delivery request, we will make every effort to honor that request.
- Requests For Flags Flown Over The White House. The flags flown over the White House are used as long as they are serviceable and then, according to flag protocol, are burned. Therefore we regret that it is not possible to provide flags for special occasions. However, flags flown over the United States Capitol may be obtained through members of Congress. You may wish to contact your U.S. Representative or your U.S. Senators for help in this matter.
